Jose Tabata drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and Paul Maholm was sharp for eight innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates posted a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday.
With the game knotted 1-1, Andrew Cashner (0-2) allowed a single, a sacrifice bunt and a walk. He was relieved by closer Carlos Marmol, who served up Tabata’s double that scored Ryan Doumit from second.
That made a winner of Maholm (5-6), who allowed just a run on seven hits with no walks as he won for the first time in four starts.
Octavio Dotel came on in the ninth and preserved the victory by striking out the side for his 15th save.
Rookie shortstop Starlin Castro drove in the Cubs’ lone run by grounding into a fielder’s choice in the second. Andrew McCutchen tied things an inning later with a triple that plated Tabata.
Cubs starter Randy Wells gave up a run on three hits over six innings of the no-decision.
