Kurt Suzuki hit two of Oakland’s four home runs and the Athletics held off the Boston Red Sox 9-8 on Thursday afternoon.
Boston pounded out 18 hits in the game but saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. The Red Sox got homers from Jeremy Hermida, Bill Hall and Marco Scutaro but they also had two runners thrown out at the plate.
Suzuki homered in the second inning and again in the fourth off loser Tim Wakefield (1-4). His second shot was part of a four-run inning that gave the A’s the lead for good.
Jack Cust and Kevin Kouzmanoff also homered for Oakland which salvaged the final game of the three-game series at Fenway Park.
Vin Mazzaro (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Brett Anderson, who left the game after two innings with an undisclosed injury.
Hall had four hits for the Red Sox and Kevin Youkilis finished with three.
Andrew Bailey pitched the ninth inning and allowed the home run to Hall but hung on to notch his 12th save.
