Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched eight strong innings and Adrian Beltre cracked a grand slam to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 6-2 win over the Cleveland Indians Thursday night.
Matsuzaka (8-3) allowed a first-inning home run to Shin-Soo Choo and then shut down the Indians the rest of the way as Boston gained a split of the four-game series. The right-hander scattered five hits and two walks while striking out six.
The Red Sox finally got to losing pitcher Josh Tomlin in the fourth inning. Tomlin (1-1) set down the first 10 Red Sox batters but then loaded the bases on two walks and a single by Marco Scutaro in the inning.
Beltre followed with his grand slam, his 20th homer of the season, over the Green Monster with two outs.
The Red Sox broke the game open with two more runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single by J.D. Drew.
The Indians brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but Jonathan Papelbon struck out Trevor Crowe for the final out and his 26th save.
