Two-run doubles from rookies Lou Marson and Jason Donald highlighted a seven-run seventh as the Cleveland Indians rallied from a six-run deficit en route to a 13-11 win over the New York Yankees on Saturday.
Cleveland trailed 10-4 after five innings, but turned all of that around in the seventh. Austin Kearns singled home Trevor Crowe to make it 10-6, then with runners on first and second and two outs, the Yankees brought in Joba Chamberlain. Chamberlain (1-3) was ineffective, allowing five straight runners to reach before getting the final out. He allowed four hits and four runs, including the doubles to Marson and Donald, in just 1/3 of an inning.
Marson had three hits and three RBIs and Austin Kearns had three hits and a pair of RBIs for the Indians.
Tribe starter David Huff was taken off the field on a stretcher in the third inning after he was hit above the left ear by an Alex Rodriguez line drive. The ball was struck so hard it ricocheted off Huff’s head and into right field for a double. Play was stopped while Huff lay motionless before he was treated and released from a local hospital. Huff’s CT scan was negative and he returned to Yankee Stadium for the conclusion of the game.
Robinson Cano had three hits and three RBIs for the Yankees, giving him seven RBIs in the first two games of this series. Rodriguez also drove in three for New York, which scored six times in the fourth but couldn’t make it stand.
Rafael Perez (1-0) pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the win and Kerry Wood notched just his second save, even though he allowed a run in the ninth.
Yankees starter CC Sabathia was hit hard again, allowing five runs in six innings. Sabathia is winless in his last five starts.
