Mat Latos pitched seven shutout innings and Scott Hairston’s fourth-inning sacrifice fly held up as the San Diego Padres defeated the visiting San Francisco Giants 1-0 on Tuesday night.
The victory was San Diego’s fifth in a row and moved the Padres (8-6) into a tie for first place with San Francisco.
The Giants threatened against closer Heath Bell in the ninth, putting runners on first and third with one out. But Bell retired Juan Uribe on a pop-up to shallow right and struck out John Bowker for his fourth save in five chances.
San Diego’s run came across when Chase Headley led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, stole second, moved to third out a foul out and scored on Hairston’s sacrifice fly.
Latos (1-1) allowed just four hits and one walk.
Mike Adams relieved Latos to start the eighth and gave up a leadoff triple to Nate Schierholtz but stranded Schierholtz at third by retiring Eli Whiteside on an infield grounder, pinch hitter Bengie Molina on an infield pop-up and striking out Eugenio Velez.
San Francisco starter Jonathan Sanchez (1-1) had another stellar outing against the Padres despite taking the loss. He allowed just one hit in seven innings and struck out 10. Sanchez no-hit the Padres in San Francisco last July.
