Drew Butera delivered a walk-off single to lift the
Minnesota Twins to a seventh straight victory, 5-4, over the visiting
San Diego Padres on Sunday.
Francisco Liriano made it seven straight quality starts for the
Minnesota rotation, and Alexi Casilla hit a solo homer for the Twins, who
have won 14 of their last 16.
After the Padres came back to tie the game in the eighth, Minnesota
got to Chad Qualls (3-3) in the bottom of the ninth. Delmon Young led
off with a single and was sacrificed over to second. San Diego elected
to intentionally walk Tsuyoshi Nishioka to face Butera, who singled to
plate the winning run.
Alex Burnett (2-4) pitched a scoreless inning of relief to pick up the win.
The Twins trailed, 3-1, in the seventh but rallied to take the lead,
tying it on Rene Tosoni’s RBI double and taking the lead when Matt
Tolbert doubled home Tosoni.
Chase Headley and Ryan Ludwick each recorded two hits and an RBI for the Padres, who have dropped five straight.
