Carlos Beltran belted three homers for the first time in his career and tied a personal-best with six RBIs as the New York Mets recorded a 9-5 victory over the host Colorado Rockies on Thursday.
All three of Beltran’s homers were two-run shots. The switch-hitter homered in the first inning while batting left-handed, went deep in the seventh from the right side and added another in the ninth while hitting left-handed as the Mets defeated the Rockies for the second straight game.
Jose Reyes had a two-run single during New York’s three-run fourth inning as the Mets jumped out to a 5-1 lead and kept Colorado starter Ubaldo Jimenez (0-3) winless in six starts this season. The loss was the sixth in seven games for the Rockies.
New York’s Jonathon Niese (2-4) pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up five runs and seven hits. Niese struck out three and walked two.
Jonathan Herrera homered in the first inning and Todd Helton homered in the fourth for Colorado. The Rockies added three runs in the seventh on Alfredo Amezaga’s run-scoring single and Seth Smith’s two-run double.
Jimenez matched a career-high by walking six in just 3 2/3 innings. He gave up five runs and three hits while striking out three.
