Mets 7, Brewers 3: Daniel Murphy belted a two-run homer and Lucas Duda added a solo shot and an RBI double as visiting New York ended its six-game losing streak.
Jon Niese pitched six effective innings for the Mets, who prevented the Brewers from matching a franchise record with their 10th straight home victory. Milwaukee fell 3 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the second wild-card spot in the National League. The Cardinals dropped an 8-5 decision to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.
Ike Davis and Duda each drove in a run in the first inning before Murphy deposited the first offering from Mike Fiers into the second deck in right field with one out in the second for his sixth blast of the year and a 4-0 lead. Fiers entered the contest having served up only six home runs over 109 1/3 innings in 2012.
Niese (11-9) allowed two runs and six hits en route to ending his personal three-game skid. The right-hander, who walked three and struck out five, has surrendered three runs or less in seven of his last eight starts.
Fiers (9-8), who hit an RBI single during Milwaukee's two-run second, yielded four runs and six hits over five innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Milwaukee CF Carlos Gomez returned to the lineup after suffering a bruised right quadriceps on Wednesday and went 1-for-3 with a walk. But 1B Corey Hart missed his fourth straight game with a left foot injury. ... New York RHP Jenrry Mejia will make his first start since Sept. 15, 2010 on Saturday. Mejia has not started in the major leagues since undergoing Tommy John surgery.
