Diamondbacks 7, Giants 2: Paul Goldschmidt homered and drove in a career high-tying five runs while Josh Collmenter combined with four relievers on a four-hitter as visiting Arizona cruised to victory in the opener of the three-game series.
Aaron Hill scored three times and collected three of the six hits by the Diamondbacks, who improved to 4-1 on their seven-game road trip but remained 5 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the second wild card spot in the National League with eight contests remaining.
Goldschmidt opened the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly and gave Arizona a 5-0 lead in the third with a three-run homer off Tim Lincecum (10-15). Goldschmidt, whose only other five-RBI performance came against Milwaukee on Oct. 4, 2011, in an NL Division Series game, added another sacrifice fly in the fifth to cap his impressive effort.
Elected to start in place of rookie Tyler Skaggs late Monday night, Collmenter (5-3) allowed just one run and two hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings. The right-hander, who was making his first start since July 27, improved to 4-1 lifetime against San Francisco.
Buster Posey and pinch hitter Ryan Theriot each hit an RBI double for the NL West champion Giants, who fell to 6-2 on their 10-game homestand.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Lincecum, who has lost six straight against Arizona, had his personal three-game winning streak snapped as he surrendered seven runs on five hits and four walks over four innings. ... Hill returned to the Diamondbacks' lineup after missing Monday's game with an upper respiratory flu. ... San Francisco 2B Marco Scutaro extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a leadoff double in the fourth inning.
