White Sox 4, Royals 3 (12): Conor Gillaspie led off the 12th inning with a home run to lift visiting Chicago to its sixth consecutive win and send Kansas City to its fifth straight defeat.
Four Royals relievers worked perfect innings before Gillaspie turned on an 0-1 breaking ball from Luke Hochevar (3-2) and got it just over the outstretched glove of leaping right fielder Justin Maxwell. Jake Petricka (1-0) induced an inning-ending double play in the 11th to earn the win in his major-league debut and Addison Reed pitched around a leadoff walk in the 12th for his 34th save.
Both starters lasted seven innings, but neither factored in the decision. White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana allowed three runs on four hits and struck out seven, while Royals right-hander James Shields gave up three runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts.
Quintana retired the first nine batters before Alex Gordon's single leading off the fourth and had faced the minimum until things fell apart in the fifth. He walked Billy Butler leading off the inning and surrendered three straight singles and a pair of sacrifice flies as Kansas City took a 3-0 lead.
Chicago trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the sixth, thanks to RBI singles from Alexei Ramirez and Dayan Viciedo, and tied it on Josh Phegley's run-scoring double in the seventh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: 1B Paul Konerko was scratched from the White Sox lineup because he felt light-headed. … The Royals have scored three or fewer runs in nine of their last 10 contests. … Chicago RF Avisail Garcia went 1-for-5, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
