Astros 16, Mariners 9: Jose Altuve had four hits and four RBIs and Chris Carter homered twice among four hits as Houston snapped a six-game losing streak by routing host Seattle.
Altuve, Marwin Gonzalez and J.D. Martinez also homered and the Astros racked up 22 hits and nearly matched their season output of 17 runs scored through seven games. Houston scored six runs in the first, three in the second and two in both the third and fourth innings before the Mariners had a hit.
The Astros pounded Mariners starter Brandon Maurer (0-2) for six runs and seven hits in just two-thirds of an inning. Carlos Pena had a two-run double, Martinez and Matt Dominguez had RBI singles and Altuve’s second hit of the inning was a two-run double that ended Maurer’s night.
Carter hit a solo shot in the second and Martinez added a two-run homer later in the inning. Gonzalez homered leading off the third to make it 10-0 and Altuve’s two-out solo homer in the fourth boosted the lead to 13.
Houston starter Erik Bedard threw four scoreless innings and Paul Clemens (1-0) gave up five runs in four innings in his major-league debut. Jason Bay homered off Clemens in the seventh and Raul Ibanez and Michael Morse hit back-to-back homers off him in the eighth and Seattle scored four in the ninth off Hector Ambriz.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Houston scored a total of nine runs during its six-game skid. The Astros have scored 24 runs in their two victories. … Mariners OF Michael Saunders went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to seven games. … The Astros’ run total was their highest since scoring 18 runs on 22 hits against the St. Louis Cardinals on August 3, 2010.
