Mariners 3, Athletics 2: Mike Zunino’s first major-league home run was a tiebreaking blast in the seventh inning as Seattle halted Oakland’s 11-game home winning streak.
Joe Saunders (5-6) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings to improve to 15-6 in 23 career starts against the Athletics. The victory was the first in seven road outings for Saunders. Oliver Perez worked around a two-out single by Josh Reddick in the ninth to pick up his first major-league save.
Zunino’s homer with one out in the seventh off Tommy Milone (6-6) barely cleared the center-field fence, giving Seattle a 2-1 lead. Raul Ibanez plated an insurance run with an eighth-inning single.
Chris Young went 3-for-3, including a second-deck blast to left field to start the eighth off Danny Farquhar to get Oakland within one. The loss was just the sixth in the last 27 games for the Athletics.
Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the second, when Michael Morse scored on Zunino’s double-play grounder against Milone, who gave up two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. The Athletics tied the game in the fifth as Eric Sogard delivered a two-out, run-scoring double.
