J.A. Happ limited the Oakland Athletics to one run in six-plus innings and Luke Voit broke a 1-1 tie with a leadoff home run in the eighth Tuesday night, allowing the New York Yankees to get even in a key three-game series with a 5-1 victory in Oakland, Calif.

Adeiny Hechavarria also homered for the Yankees (87-52), who rebounded from a 6-3 loss on Monday night to regain a 4 1/2-game advantage over the A's (83-57) in the American League wild-card race.

Stephen Piscotty homered for Oakland, which had a two-game winning streak come to an end.

The clubs meet for one final time in the regular season on Wednesday night.

Happ served up Piscotty's 22nd home run with one out in the second inning, but limited the A's to just one other hit in his six innings. He walked one and struck out five.

The left-hander exited a 1-1 game, and the New York bullpen handled things the rest of the way, with David Robertson (8-3) earning the win after a three-strikeout seventh inning before Zach Britton and Dellin Betances worked a scoreless inning apiece.

After the Yankees had tied the game in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Aaron Hicks, Voit smacked the second pitch of the eighth by Fernando Rodney (4-3) for the go-ahead homer, his eighth of the season.

New York made it a two-run inning and 3-1 lead when Hicks singled in Brett Gardner with two outs.

Hechavarria's homer, his fifth of the season, led off the ninth against the sixth Oakland pitcher, Emilio Pagan, and increased the lead to 4-1.

Gardner's two-out infield single scored Gary Sanchez, who had singled, later in the inning for the game's final run.

With Sean Manaea and Brett Anderson on the disabled list, the A's called upon Liam Hendriks to start for just the second time since 2014. The right-hander pitched just the first inning, holding the Yankees without a run or a hit, before turning over the ball to the Oakland bullpen.

Gardner scored twice and had a pair of hits, while Hicks collected two RBIs for the Yankees, who took a 3-2 lead over the A's in the season series while snapping a two-game losing streak in the process.

New York out-hit Oakland 8-2.
