New York first baseman Pete Alonso matched the National League rookie record with his 39th home run, and pitcher Marcus Stroman earned his first victory since joining the team as the visiting Mets outslugged the Atlanta Braves 10-8 on Thursday.
Alonso connected for a 451-foot three-run homer in the first inning against Atlanta starter Julio Teheran to match the record set in 2017 by Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Aaron Judge holds the major league rookie record with 52 homers in 2017.
It was a terrific night for Alonso, who went 5-for-5, his first career five-hit game, and drove in a career-high six runs.
The Braves rallied to score four runs via three home runs in the ninth inning and forced the Mets to insert closer Edwin Diaz. He walked Brian McCann but fanned Ender Inciarte to end the game and earn his 25th save.
The Mets salvaged one win out of the three-game series and snapped their three-game losing streak.
Stroman (7-11) got his first win with the Mets after being denied in two previous starts. He allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Stroman improved to 3-0 in his career against the Braves.
Teheran (7-8) allowed six runs in 1 1/3 innings, the shortest start of his career. He gave up eight hits and three walks and had two strikeouts.
New York's Amed Rosario went 5-for-6 with a double, a triple and four runs. It was the first five-hit game of Rosario's career, and he became the first Met with back-to-back games of at least four hits since Jose Reyes in June 2011.
The Mets amassed a season-high 23 hits, tied for third most in franchise history. Wilson Ramos (four hits), Juan Lagares (three) and Michael Conforto (two) also posted multi-hit games.
Atlanta hit six home runs in the loss, two each by Freddie Freeman, who has 31 this year, and Josh Donaldson, who has 28. The Braves got a solo shot from Matt Joyce, his fourth, and a two-run homer from Ronald Acuna Jr., his 35th.
Todd Frazier hit his 16th homer for the Mets.
