Teoscar Hernandez homered as part of a six-run fifth inning, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three RBIs as the Toronto Blue Jays crushed the visiting Boston Red Sox 8-0 Wednesday night.
Hernandez and Randal Grichuk each drove in a pair as Toronto batted around in the fifth to send Boston to its fifth straight loss. Rowdy Tellez added a solo homer for the Blue Jays.
The Red Sox were held to two hits and put just four men on base in the contest.
Trent Thornton (5-9) earned the win after opener Wilmer Font pitched the first two innings for Toronto. In the first relief appearance of his career, Thornton struck out seven and walked one over five hitless innings.
Boston went the bullpen route, with Bobby Poyner striking out two over two perfect frames to start. Trevor Kelley (0-1) came on and pitched a perfect third, but the Blue Jays got to him for a pair of runs on a Guerrero sacrifice fly and Tellez's homer, his 19th of the season, in the fourth.
Toronto blew the game open in the next inning. Three straight singles loaded the bases for Guerrero with one out, and he singled home a pair off Ryan Weber to up the lead to 4-0. After Brian Johnson got Tellez to pop out, the Red Sox went to their bullpen again, summoning Travis Lakins.
Grichuk greeted Lakins with a two-run double, and Hernandez followed with his blast, his 22nd, for the 8-0 margin.
Thornton, meanwhile, kept cruising, striking out a pair in the seventh inning to end his night. In his last two outings against Boston, the rookie had been tagged for 12 runs on 16 hits in four combined innings.
After Rafael Devers singled with two outs in the first, the Red Sox were held hitless until Brock Holt singled to lead off the ninth. In between, Christian Vazquez reached by error in the second and Xander Bogaerts walked in the third before 16 Boston batters went down in order.
