The Colorado Rockies got home runs from Sam Hilliard and Brendan Rodgers and benefitted from three Los Angeles errors on the way to a 12-3 win over the Angels on Tuesday night in Anaheim, Calif.
Hilliard's blow was the big one, a three-run, pinch-hit homer off Angels starter Jose Suarez in the fourth inning. Hilliard had three hits and scored twice.
Connor Joe, one of five Rockies with at least two hits, had two singles, a double and three RBIs.
The only bright spot for Los Angeles was Shohei Ohtani's 463-foot home run, his major-league-leading 36th long ball of the season. It was Ohtani's sixth homer of 450 feet or more, tops in the majors.
The fifth-inning blast came against Rockies starter Austin Gomber, who otherwise shut down the Angels. Gomber (8-5) gave up two runs and five hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out seven.
The Rockies took an early lead, getting a two-run, first-inning rally started because of errors on consecutive plays by third baseman Jack Mayfield. Raimel Tapia led off the game with a single before Mayfield booted ground balls by Rodgers and then Trevor Story.
Charlie Blackmon and C.J. Cron each had an RBI on a fielder's choice to put the Rockies up 2-0 against Suarez.
It only got worse from there for Suarez and the Angels. Colorado scored three times in the third for a 5-0 lead, aided by shortstop Jose Iglesias' throwing error.
Rodgers led off the inning with a home run, and both Ryan McMahon and Elias Diaz had RBI singles later in the inning.
The Rockies added four runs in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead, getting an RBI single from Tapia and Hilliard's three-run homer. Suarez was finished after allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out four.
