Matt Olson and Yan Gomes homered, and starting pitcher Daulton Jeffries got through some early-inning struggles to lift the Oakland A's to an 8-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels Sunday afternoon in Anaheim, Calif.
Olson hit a three-run blast for his 28th of the season, while Gomes went 2-for-5 with three RBIs in his Oakland debut after being acquired from the Washington Nationals prior to Friday's trade deadline.
The game featured starting pitchers with little to no major league experience. Angels left-hander Reid Detmers was making his major league debut, while the right-handed Jeffries was making his first major league start of the season and second of his career.
Detmers started off well, keeping Oakland off the scoreboard for the first two innings, while Jeffries wasn't so fortunate, giving up a two-run homer to Max Stassi in the first inning and an RBI double to Jack Mayfield in the second.
Detmers took that 3-0 lead into the third but got knocked around for four hits and a walk, including the three-run blast by Olson and a two-run homer by Gomes as the A's took a 5-3 lead.
Meanwhile, Jeffries settled in. He held the Angels scoreless after the second inning, and finished his outing by getting Shohei Ohtani to hit into an inning-ending double play to end the fifth. Ohtani grounded into a double play in the eighth inning as well.
The Athletics added to their lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Gomes to make it 6-3. And in the sixth, Jed Lowrie's two-out, two-run single made it 8-3.
A's center fielder Starling Marte had three hits, a walk and stole three bases. In four games since Oakland acquired Marte from the Miami Marlins, he is 5-for-16 with four stolen bases.
Jeffries (1-0) got the victory after allowing three runs on three hits and three walks in his five innings, striking out three. Detmers (0-1) went 4 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
