Nestor Cortes Jr. pitched a career-high seven innings and Luke Voit drove in four runs on four hits as the New York Yankees rolled to an 10-2 rout of the Minnesota Twins Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees extended their season-high winning streak to eight games. New York also won for the 20th time in 25 games since dropping three of four at Fenway Park to the Boston Red Sox July 22-25.
In his ninth career start, Cortes (2-1) allowed two runs and four hits. He tied a career high with seven strikeouts, walked two and threw a career-high 104 pitches, after throwing 98 Sunday against the Chicago White Sox.
Voit followed up getting a two-run double out of the leadoff spot on Thursday by hitting a two-run single in New York's four-run first off Minnesota rookie Charlie Barnes (0-3) and a ground-rule double in the fourth. He got his fourth hit when he opened the seventh with his seventh homer.
It was Voit's third career four-hit game and he missed a fifth hit when he flew out to end the eighth.
Aaron Judge added a two-run homer in the second and DJ LeMahieu connected for a two-run shot in the eighth. Andrew Velazquez drew a bases-loaded walk and Brett Gardner hit an RBI single in the first as the Yankees scored double-digit runs for the sixth time this year.
The Yankees also won a rare laugher. After 14 of their previous 15 games were decided by three runs or less, New York won a game decided by five runs or more for the first time since a 10-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Aug. 4.
Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer for Minnesota, which played without slugger Miguel Sano, who was placed on the paternity list following the birth of his daughter on Thursday.
Barnes allowed seven runs and eight hits in five innings while throwing a career-high 109 pitches.
The Yankees loaded the bases and took a 2-0 lead on Voit's single to left. Following an infield single by Gary Sanchez off Barnes' glove, Velazquez drew a bases-loaded walk and Gardner singled to make it 4-0.
Judge made it 6-0 when he lined a 2-1 sinker into the right field seats for his 27th homer and Voit's double hopped over the left-center field fence in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.
Donaldson ended Cortes' shutout bid with his 17th homer. Following a mound visit from pitching coach Matt Blake, Cortes quickly finished the inning and breezed through the seventh.
