Kyle Wright had a career-high 11 strikeouts over six shutout innings to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 3-0 win over the visiting Miami Marlins on Friday in the opener of a three-game series.
Wright (2-0) allowed four hits and walked one, retiring 11 straight batters at one point, and lowered his ERA to 1.06. He has struck out 20 batters over the last 11 innings. It was his first win in four career starts against the Marlins.
The big moment for Wright came in the sixth inning when he loaded the bases with two outs. Manager Brian Snitker made a mound visit but opted to leave Wright in the game. He responded by retiring Avisail Garcia on a comebacker to escape the trouble.
Wright became the first Braves pitcher to record at least 11 strikeouts over at least six scoreless innings since Charlie Morton against the New York Mets on June 22, 2021.
The Atlanta bullpen covered the final three frames. Darren O'Day (two-thirds of an inning) and Tyler Matzek (1 1/3 innings, three strikeouts) bridged the gap to Kenley Jansen, who worked the ninth inning and struck out two to earn his fourth save.
It was Atlanta's first shutout of the season. The Braves had 18 shutouts in 2021.
Miami starter Trevor Rogers (0-3) bounced back from his worst career start to throw five strong innings. He allowed one unearned run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
In fact, all of Atlanta's runs were unearned.
The Braves scored a run in the first inning. Matt Olson scored when Marcell Ozuna was able to beat out a potential double play. The play was challenged but upheld after video review.
Olson then delivered a two-out double to drive in a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Miami brought in southpaw Richard Bleier to face the left-handed Olson, who pulled a breaking ball into the right field corner to score Dansby Swanson and Eddie Rosario.
