J.D. Martinez hit a go-ahead RBI single in the 11th inning, then scored a key insurance run on a wild pitch as the New York Mets defeated the host Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 on Thursday.
Pete Alonso ripped a solo home run while Starling Marte and Harrison Bader added two hits each for the Mets, who had lost to the Phillies each of the previous three days. Brett Baty added an RBI double.
Mets starter Jose Quintana tossed 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
Jorge Lopez (1-0) earned the win by pitching a scoreless 10th inning. Jake Diekman picked up his first save of the season despite yielding an unearned run in the bottom of the 11th.
Kyle Schwarber hit an RBI double while J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm had two hits each for the Phillies. Bryson Stott contributed a single and two RBIs.
Phillies starter Taijuan Walker left after 3 1/3 innings after being hit in the left foot by a line drive off the bat of Starling Marte. After a few minutes, Walker limped off and was replaced by Matt Strahm. Walker allowed four hits and two runs with one strikeout and two walks.
Jose Alvarado (1-2) took the loss.
Martinez knocked in automatic runner Francisco Lindor to open the 11th. After Bader doubled, Alvarado threw a wild pitch to give the Mets a 6-4 lead.
An error by first baseman Alonso and a walk by Kody Clemens loaded the bases for Philadelphia in the bottom of the frame. Stott's fielder's-choice grounder halved the deficit, but Schwarber struck out to end the game with runners on second and third.
Stott hit an RBI single with one out in the ninth to tie the game at 4.
Back in the seventh inning, after pinch hitter Stott drew a walk with two outs, Schwarber ripped an RBI double to right for a 3-2 Phillies lead.
The Mets had runners on first and second to open the eighth before Lindor and Martinez struck out. Bader then hit an RBI single that ricocheted off pitcher Jeff Hoffman and into center field. Hoffman threw a wild pitch, letting Alonso score for a 4-3 advantage.
The Mets went ahead 1-0 in the first inning when Alonso launched a solo home run to center field.
New York took a 2-0 lead in the second on Baty's RBI double.
Realmuto and Harper each singled with one out in the sixth, knocking out Quintana. Bohm then singled off Reed Garrett and Realmuto scored on an error by left fielder Tyrone Taylor. Castellanos followed with a sacrifice fly to equalize the score at 2-2.
