Ryan McMahon drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth-inning, resulting in the first walk-off pitch clock violation in major league history as the Colorado Rockies defeated the visiting Washington Nationals 8-7 on Saturday night.
With the Rockies trailing 7-6, Hunter Goodman and Jake Cave opened the ninth with singles against Kyle Finnegan (2-4). After failing to sacrifice, Brenton Doyle grounded a single to left, scoring Goodman with the tying run. Ezequiel Tovar single to right, loading the bases with no outs. With a 3-2 count on McMahon, Finnegan was called for a pitch-clock violation, resulting in ball four.
McMahon had three hits including a homer, and Goodman and Brendan Rodgers also went deep for Colorado.
Jalen Beeks (4-3) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.
Luis Garcia Jr. homered and CJ Abrams finished a triple short of the cycle, drove in two runs and scored twice for Washington.
Garcia's two-run homer gave Washington a 7-5 lead in the eighth.
McMahon homered off Hunter Harvey in the eighth to pull the Rockies within 7-6.
The Rockies took a 1-0 lead in the first. Tovar singled with one out and McMahon followed with an infield single. Jacob Stallings lined a two-out single to center, scoring Tovar.
Abrams doubled leading off the third and went to third on a balk. Lane Thomas blooped a single to center that scored Abrams. Thomas went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Eddie Rosario.
Tovar walked with one out in the bottom of the third and McMahon singled. Rodgers smacked a first-pitch fastball out to center for his fourth homer of the season and Colorado led 4-2.
Abrams homered leading off the fifth - his team-leading 12th of the season -- to pull Washington within 4-3. Washington's Jesse Winker was ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt after he was called out in strikes later in the inning.
Keibert Ruiz walked and Jacob Young singled to start the seventh for Washington. Abrams singled, scoring pinch runner Drew Millas to tie it. After Abrams was caught stealing, Thomas lined a single to center, scoring Young to give Washington a 5-4 lead.
Goodman hit his seventh homer of the season in the bottom half to tie it 5-5.
