Travis d'Arnaud drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning with a ground-rule double as the Los Angeles Angels salvaged the final game of their three-game series with the Athletics with a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon in Anaheim, Calif.
d'Arnaud, who entered the game an inning earlier after starting catcher Logan O'Hoppe was hit in the jaw with a backswing by Jacob Wilson, lined a double into the gap in right-center off reliever Osvaldo Bido (2-5) to drive in Chris Taylor, who had walked and advanced to second when Oswald Peraza was hit by a pitch. It was a franchise-record fifth Angel to get hit by a pitch in the game.
Jo Adell hit a home run and Yoan Moncada reached base four times with two singles and two hit-by-pitches for Los Angeles (67-76). Reid Detmers (5-3) picked up the win in relief and Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 26th save and the 473rd of his career.
Tyler Soderstrom went 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk and Willie MacIver also homered for the Athletics (66-78), who missed a chance to leapfrog the Angels and move into fourth place in the American League West with a win.
Los Angeles took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Adell's 35th home run, a 415-foot drive to straightaway center that drove in Moncado, who was hit by a pitch.
The Athletics cut the lead to 2-1 in the third on MacIver's third home run, a 407-foot drive to center.
The Angels extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth. Taylor was hit by a pitch leading off the inning, stole second and scored on a two-out ground-rule double down the right field line by Bryce Teodosio.
The A's closed to within 3-2 in the seventh when Soderstrom led off with his 24th homer, a 389-foot opposite field drive into the bullpen in left, and then tied it, 3-3, in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to the wall in center by Colby Thomas, driving in Nick Kurtz who had singled and advanced to third on a single by Brent Rooker.
