Spurs 104, Celtics 92: Tim Duncan tallied 25 points and nine rebounds and Boris Diaw added 18 points as visiting San Antonio pulled away for its fifth straight win over Boston.
Marco Belinelli flirted with a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Spurs, who played without starters Tony Parker (rest), Kawhi Leonard (hand) and Tiago Splitter (calf) as well as key reserve Manu Ginobili (hamstring). Patty Mills added 16 points off the bench while San Antonio earned a 40-38 advantage on the boards to improve to 24-0 when collecting at least as many rebounds as the opposition.
Rajon Rondo scored 16 points while Kelly Olynyk collected 15 points and 10 rebounds and fellow reserve Kris Humphries also scored 15 for the Celtics, who lost for only the second time in their last six games. Brandon Bass scored 12 points and Jerryd Bayless added 11 points and nine assists off the bench for Boston, which continues to play without guard Avery Bradley (ankle).
Duncan took over in the third quarter, scoring 11 points as the Spurs extended their advantage to 71-66, and San Antonio steadily pulled away in the fourth. After Diaw's layup, Mills swiped the ball from Olynyk and converted a three-point play to push it to 76-68 and Boston didn't get closer than six the rest of the way.
Both teams struggled to stay in an offensive rhythm, especially early, as Boston missed 12 of its first 13 shots while falling behind 13-2 but closed the gap when the Spurs misfired on their final two shots of the first quarter and their first eight attempts in the second. Diaw heated up and scored nine points in the quarter to help San Antonio pull out to a 48-44 halftime lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Spurs used their 23rd different starting lineup and their fifth in the last six games. … Celtics F Jared Sullinger struggled to four points on 2-of-9 shooting, ending his career-best streak of six consecutive double-doubles. … Rondo has hit three or more 3-pointers in each of the last two games, the first time he has done so in his career.
