Trae Young scored 14 of his season-high 43 points in overtime to help the Atlanta Hawks beat the visiting Brooklyn Nets 147-145 on Wednesday and end their three-game losing streak.
Young hit a basket with 18 seconds remaining to put Atlanta ahead 144-143, and he upped the lead to three points with a pair of free throws with 6.7 seconds left.
After Brooklyn's Mikal Bridges made two free throws with 3.9 seconds remaining, Young split a pair of free throws for a two-point lead. Lonnie Walker IV didn't get a long 3-pointer off in time as the buzzer sounded.
Both teams had a chance to win it in regulation. Brooklyn's Cameron Johnson tipped in the go-ahead basket with 3.3 seconds left, and Young could only make 1 of 2 free throws with one second left to tie the game 131-131 and send it to overtime.
The Hawks got 25 points and 11 rebounds from De'Andre Hunter and 20 points from Dejounte Murray. Clint Capela had 14 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks.
Bridges matched his career high with 45 points to go along with 10 rebounds. The Nets also got 26 points and 12 assists from Spencer Dinwiddie, 23 points from Johnson and 22 points and 11 rebounds from Nic Claxton.
Atlanta raced to a 45-33 lead after one quarter thanks to a 19-point effort from Young, who hit his first six 3-pointers. Atlanta led by as many as 15 after Saddiq Bey's three-point play at 11:22 of the second, only to see the Nets cut the lead to 54-40 at 7:31 on Johnson's jumper. The Hawks led 77-67 at halftime.
Atlanta, playing the second night of a back-to-back, began to show some fatigue in the third quarter and allowed the Nets to catch up and take the lead at 93-92. After a Brooklyn timeout, the Hawks outscored the Nets 8-2 and led 100-95 entering the fourth quarter.
The Hawks begin a five-game road trip on Saturday against the Washington Wizards. The Nets begin a five-game homestand on Saturday against the Miami Heat.
