Harper Kamp scored 25 points and Jorge Gutierrez scored 20 - both career highs - as host California pulled away in the second half to defeat New Mexico 89-64 Saturday.
Freshman guard Gary Franklin scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers, for California (2-0), which has won 21 straight non-conference home games, and 40 of its last 42.
Senior guard Dairese Gary had 16 points, Jamal Fenton scored 14, Kendall Williams scored 12 points off the bench and freshman center Alex Kirk added eight points for New Mexico (2-1).
Cal opened the game with a 12-4 run and led by 10 with 11:49 left in the half. New Mexico made six 3-pointers in the first half to close the gap, but Cal’s Richard Solomon ended the half with a dunk to give the Bears a 38-36 lead.
Cal broke the game open with a 25-9 run to start the second half and led by 18 with 11:32 remaining. Kamp’s layup with 4:44 left gave Cal an 83-56 lead.
