Markhuri Sanders-Frison had 15 points as California ended a two-game home losing streak with a 51-41 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday.
Jorge Gutierrez added 10 points for Cal (6-4), which has won 42 of its last 46 non-conference home games.
Scoring was a struggle for both teams throughout, but the Bears managed to seize control late with a 12-2 run. Allan Crabbe’s 3-pointer with 2:54 left snapped a 39-39 tie and Sanders-Frison followed with a layup to make it 44-39 with 1:39 remaining. Gutierrez added a 3-pointer following a timeout.
It certainly wasn’t a game for the time capsule. Sanders-Frison had four of the Bears’ five first-half field goals (5 of 19). Cal Poly, meanwhile, was just 4 of 26 in the opening stanza and trailed, 19-12.
Shawn Lewis had 16 points for the Mustangs, who shot just 29 percent (15 of 51). Cal, meanwhile, shot 38 percent (17 of 44).
