UCLA notched an enormous upset and ended BYU’s perfect season. The Bruins beat the Cougars 86-79 on Saturday in the John R. Wooden Classic at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. They are 12-11 all-time in this battle of acronyms.
Forward Reeves Nelson provided a team-high 23 points on 8 of 15 shooting for the Bruins (7-4). They also received double-digits from Tyler Honeycutt, Joshua Smith and Lazeric Jones, a total of 44 points. No. 18 BYU (10-1) actually outshot the Bruins at 52.9 to 47.9 percent, but it was cold beyond the arc, shooting 4 of 18 (22.2 percent).
The Cougars were led by darkhorse Player of the Year candidate Jimmer Fredette once again. He provided a game-high 25 points but committed seven turnovers. BYU led 18-16 with 11:46 remaining in the first half, but the Cougars never regained the lead after an 11-3 run by UCLA.
The Bruins are looking to rebound after two disappointing seasons. Their best performance this season before Saturday was a 77-76 loss at Kansas.
Junior guard Malcolm Lee was limited by a strained patellar tendon in his right knee, which he injured early in the second half on Dec. 5. He scored just nine points.
