Rutgers won their first road game of the year, defeating Monmouth 79-56, and improved their record to 8-2. Midway through the second half, the Scarlet Knights went on an 8-0 run, took a 52-44 lead, and never looked back. Rutgers was led by 6-0 senior guard Mike Coburn who had a game-high 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting. With the loss Monmouth fell to 4-7.
The Scarlet Knights had four players in double figures. Besides Coburn, 6-7 senior Jonathan Miller had 16, Dane Miller added 14 and freshman Gilvydas Biruta chipped in with 10. Monmouth was led by RJ Rutledge, a 6-4 senior guard, who had 17 points. Ranked 26th nationally in field goal defense, Rutgers held Monmouth to .385% shooting from the floor. Rutgers led at the half, 37-31, and outscored Monmouth, 42-25, over the last twenty minutes.
This is Rutgers' coach Mike Rice's first year in New Brunswick after three years as head coach at Robert Morris College. Dave Calloway, in his 14th season at Monmouth, is the most-tenured coach in the Northeast Conference. Tonight was the seventh overall meeting between the two schools with Rutgers now having won all seven contests.
