Hollis Thompson led the way with 18 points and nine rebounds as No. 15 Georgetown coasted past visiting Connecticut 58-44 on Wednesday.
Henry Sims chipped in 13 points and Jason Clark scored 11 for the Hoyas (17-4, 7-3 Big East), who bounced back from a loss at Pittsburgh over the weekend by locking down on the defensive end.
Connecticut (14-7, 4-5) has lost four in a row and dropped out of the rankings for the first time in 28 weeks when the latest Top 25 was released Monday.
Wednesday’s performance likely will not catapult the Huskies back up the list as they shot 29.5 percent from the field, including 2 of 21 from beyond the arc. Star sophomores Jeremy Lamb and Shabazz Napier had the two roughest nights, combining to shoot 4 of 27 from the field and 2 of 14 from 3-point range.
Georgetown turned it on in the back end of the first half, allowing two field goals among the Huskies’ last 22 attempts in the half. Sims and Thompson combined for all the points in an 11-4 burst to end the period, sending the Hoyas into the locker room up 31-21.
Connecticut crept as close as 45-39 with 7:39 left but a 10-2 run over the next four minutes put the game away.
