No. 2 Louisville 79, Manhattan 51: Russ Smith hit four 3-pointers en route to 23 points and added five steals as the second-ranked Cardinals ran away from the visiting Jaspers.
Peyton Siva collected 10 points and eight assists and Chane Behanan chipped in eight points and nine rebounds for Louisville (1-0), which forced 27 turnovers and had six players score at least eight points in its season opener.
The Cardinals grabbed a 28-19 lead at the half and were never threatened after the break. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Luke Hancock and Kevin Ware sparked a 14-6 run that pushed the lead to 59-38 with 8:05 left.
Wayne Blackshear’s 3-pointer with 28 seconds provided the final margin and gave Louisville its biggest lead of the afternoon.
Rhamel Brown recorded 18 points and 14 rebounds and Michael Alvarado scored 13 points for Manhattan (0-1), which shot 35.7 percent from the floor.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Manhattan coach Steve Masiello spent seven seasons as Rick Pitino’s assistant on the Cardinals bench. … Louisville freshman Montrezl Harrell scored six points on 3-of-5 shooting in his debut. … The Jaspers hung tough on the boards, 33-33, but had five players with at least three turnovers.
