Providence 79, St. John’s 74: Josh Fortune scored a career-high 24 points as the Friars improved their at-large resume by holding off the Red Storm in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament in New York.

LaDontae Henton collected 16 points and 11 rebounds for No. 4 seed Providence (21-11), which will face No. 8 seed Seton Hall in Friday's semifinals. Kadeem Batts contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds while leading scorer Bryce Cotton battled foul trouble and was held to 12 points and was 1-for-10 from the field for the Friars.

D’Angelo Harrison came alive down the stretch and finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 5 seed St. John’s (20-12). Rysheed Jordan added 17 points and JaKarr Sampson collected 15 points and nine boards for the Red Storm.

Henton’s layup with just under 6 1/2 minutes remaining gave Providence a 63-46 advantage before St. John’s began to make a run. Sampson’s tip with 2:32 left cut it to 67-64 and the Red Storm drew within a point in the final minute before the Friars clinched it with 10 free throws in the final 31 seconds.

Fortune and Henton each scored five points as Providence closed the first half on a 14-4 run to take a 36-33 lead into the break. Fortune scored eight straight Friars points to help increase the advantage to 50-37 with 14:27 to play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Providence split the season series with Seton Hall, falling in double overtime at home on Dec. 31 and earning a 74-69 win on the road Feb. 28. … Tyler Harris and Carson Desrosiers each hauled in 10 rebounds to help the Friars to a 49-44 edge on the glass. … St. John’s dropped three of its final five games to hurt its chances at an NCAA at-large bid.
