USF 71, Hofstra 70: Corey Allen Jr. scored 18 points and Chris Perry delivered the go-ahead basket with seven seconds left as the host Bulls overcame a 15-point second-half deficit to edge the Pride.
Trailing 57-42 with 8 1/2 minutes remaining, Allen scored 10 of his 13 second-half points during a furious 24-9 run to tie it at 66-66 with 1 1/2 minutes remaining. Allen hit a 3-pointer to give USF (4-1) its first lead of the second half with 50 seconds to go and, after Hofstra’s Juan'ya Green answered with two free throws and following a timeout, the Bulls’ Anthony Collins lobbed a perfect pass into the post to Perry for the game-winner.
Nehemias Morillo poured in 15 points, Bo Zeigler added 12 and Collins finished with a season-high 12 assists for the Bulls, who managed to win despite going 3-of-8 from the foul line. Ameen Tanksley led all scorers with 20 for Hofstra (3-2), while Green tallied 17 and Brian Bernardi had 14.
Hofstra, which missed 11 of its next 12 shots after hitting two of its first three, connected on four straight field-goal attempts to spark a 23-6 run that turned an eight-point deficit into a nine-point lead with 2 1/2 minutes left in the first half. USF ran off five of the last seven points before the break and cut its deficit to 43-40 on a layup by Zeigler just over four minutes after intermission.
The Bulls managed only one field goal over the next 8 1/2 minutes, allowing Bernardi and Tanksley to each hit a pair of 3-pointers over that stretch as Hofstra’s lead grew as large as 15. Allen jump-started USF’s rally with a jumper and knocked down the final two of his three 3-pointers to set up the last-minute drama.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Hofstra shot 11-of-26 from beyond the arc, marking the second straight game it hit at least 10 triples and the fourth time in five games it connected on at least nine. … USF G Troy Holston (severe left ankle sprain) did not play. … The Pride were denied their first three-game winning streak since Nov. 16-18, 2012 and their best six-game start to a season since 2008-09.
