Damon Lynn scored 27 points and New Jersey Institute of Technology scored the game's final nine points to top South Florida 60-57 Monday night in Tampa, Fla.
The Bulls led by as many as 15 points in the first half and held a 57-51 advantage with two minutes left. But they lost their second consecutive game to open the 2015-16 season.
Lynn, a junior guard, hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 48 seconds left, and he was 5-for-12 from beyond the arc in the game.
Senior guard Ky Howard scored 10 points and five of them came in the last 73 seconds. Howard, who had a double-double with 10 rebounds, hit a 3-pointer to cut South Florida's lead to 57-55 with 1:13 to play, and his two free throws gave the Highlanders (1-1) a three-point advantage with 17 seconds to play.
Freshman guard Jahmal McMurray led the Bulls (0-2) with 14 points off the bench. Sophomore guard Roddy Peters and senior forward Angel Nunez scored 13 and 11, respectively, but the Bulls shot 27.3 percent (6-for-22) from the foul line and missed nine of their 24 free throws.
South Florida, which opened its season with a loss to Troy, jumped out to a 23-5 lead and also had a 10-point lead with a little more than five minutes remaining in the game.
