Junior guard Isaac Bonton scored a career-high 34 points and C.J. Elleby added 22 as Washington State defeated Oregon State 89-76 on Saturday afternoon in Pullman, Wash.
Bonton, in his first season with the Cougars, made 8 of 13 shots from the field, 4 of 7 from 3-point range and all 14 attempts from the free throw line. He added eight rebounds, eight assists, two steals and a block.
Elleby was almost as impressive, making 5 of 8 2-point field goals and all six free throws. He collected nine rebounds and handed out five assists.
Tres Tinkle finished with 22 points to lead Oregon State. Ethan Thompson added 14.
Washington State (12-7, 3-3 Pac-12) retired the jersey of former Cougars star Klay Thompson in a halftime ceremony and then used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to gain separation from Oregon State (12-6, 2-4 Pac-12).
The Cougars led 59-56 with 11:57 remaining and then shut out Oregon State over the next 4:42 to push their lead to 69-56 with 7:15 left. Oregon State got as close as six points but trailed by double digits for the final 4:15.
Washington State completed a sweep of the Oregon schools for the first time since 2011, having stunned No. 8 Oregon earlier in the week.
The game's other important sequence was the final 1:41 of the first half. Oregon State had established a small lead at 40-37, but Washington State scored the final nine points of the half to grab a 46-40 lead.
Bonton and Elleby provided all nine points in that flurry to close the half. Bonton hit a 3-pointer just before time expired to create a six-point margin.
Both teams shot well from the field. Oregon State made 31 of 62 field goal attempts. Washington State hit 28 of 55 (50.9 percent). Three-point shooting and free throws also helped catapulted Washington State to the win. WSU hit six more 3-pointers than Oregon State (8-2) and 13 more foul shots (25-12).
