Penguins 4, Senators 2: James Neal collected two goals and an assist and captain Sidney Crosby added a three-point performance as host Pittsburgh upended Ottawa in a game which saw reigning Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson exit with an Achilles injury.
Karlsson was pinned against the left-wing boards by Matt Cooke during the final minute of the second period. Cooke's left skate came in contact with the lower left leg of the defenseman, who immediately fell to the ice in pain. Karlsson will require surgery and be sidelined indefinitely with a lacerated left Achilles tendon, the team said.
Crosby's two assists increased his career total to 400. Pascal Dupuis also tallied and Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 27 shots for the Penguins, who snapped a two-game losing skid by defeating the Senators for the second time this season. Pittsburgh posted a 2-1 shootout victory over Ottawa on Jan. 27.
After wiring a shot from the right faceoff circle for a power-play goal to forge a 2-2 tie in the second period, Neal netted the eventual winner just 1:52 into the third. Defenseman Deryk Engelland's point shot was denied by Craig Anderson, but Neal found the net from the doorstep for his team-leading 10th goal - and fifth in as many games.
Stephane Da Costa and Jim O'Brien scored 24 seconds apart in the second period and Anderson finished with 26 saves for the Senators, who fell for the third time in four contests (1-2-1).
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ottawa LW Milan Michalek sat out the contest after suffering a lower-body injury during warmups. ... Pittsburgh Ds Kris Letang and Matt Niskanen made their returns from lower-body injuries. Letang and Niskanen had been sidelined three and eight games respectively. ... The Penguins sent LW Eric Tangradi to Winnipeg for a seventh-round pick in the 2013 NHL draft. Pittsburgh will travel to Manitoba to face the Jets on Friday.
