Maple Leafs 5, Islanders 2: Phil Kessel scored twice to snap a four-game drought and Jonathan Bernier made 35 saves as Toronto won its fifth consecutive home contest.

Trevor Smith extended his point streak to three games with a goal and two assists and David Clarkson added his first goal as a member of the Maple Leafs. Mason Raymond also scored and Joffrey Lupul had three assists.

Casey Cizikas and Frans Nielsen replied for New York, which lost its fifth straight road game - falling to 3-7-0 in away contests. Kevin Poulin stopped 19 shots.

Smith opened the scoring 22 seconds into the first period, charging to the net on a rush and one-timing a pass from Lupul. Kessel fired a quick wrist shot from the right faceoff circle with a man advantage 11:19 into the second period to make it 2-0.

Cizikas trimmed the deficit late in the second period, but Raymond restored Toronto’s two-goal advantage 3:39 into the third period by banging home a rebound. Clarkson put the Maple Leafs up 4-1 with a wrist shot that sailed past Poulin’s glove 9:13 later before Nielsen and Kessel exchanged late tallies.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Smith, 28, has two goals and three assists in the last three games. He has 12 points in 36 career NHL contests. … The Islanders lost in Toronto for the first time in four visits. … The Maple Leafs host the Nashville Predators Thursday for the third contest of their five-game homestand. … The Islanders have allowed a Metropolitan Division-worst 73 goals.
