Islanders 1, Coyotes 0: Frans Nielsen scored with 2:31 remaining in the third period as New York completed its five-game road trip with its third straight victory.

Jaroslav Halak turned aside 19 shots en route to his 31st career shutout as the Islanders posted only their second win in their last six visits to Arizona. Mikhail Grabovski and defenseman Thomas Hickey each notched an assist for New York, which went 3-2-0 on its trek.

Mike Smith finished with 32 saves for the Coyotes, who had their three-game winning streak come to an end. Arizona went 0-for-5 on the power play but did not allow a man-advantage goal for the first time in seven contests.

Neither team had any luck solving the opposing goaltender for nearly 57 1/2 minutes until New York managed to break through with time winding down in regulation. Grabovski carried down the right wing and circled behind the net before dishing the puck to Nielsen, who beat Smith high to the glove side from the top of the slot.

Halak was busiest in the third period, stopping eight shots in the session after turning aside 11 over the first 40 minutes. Smith was superb prior to the goal, making 19 saves over the first two periods while denying Cal Clutterbuck on a short-handed breakaway early in the third.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Nielsen's goal was his fifth of the season and first since he registered a hat trick on Oct. 25 against Dallas. ... New York allowed a total of three goals over the final three games of its road trip after being outscored 8-1 in the first two contests. ... Islanders captain John Tavares registered a game-high seven shots on goal.
