Brayden Point, Steven Stamkos and Alex Killorn each scored a goal and the host Tampa Bay Lightning continued their dominance of the Detroit Red Wings with a 3-1 victory on Thursday.
The Red Wings remained winless through seven games, their worst start in franchise history. Their futility against the Lightning also continued. They haven't defeated Tampa Bay since November 2015, a stretch of 12 games. They've also lost 12 straight in Tampa, with their last victory there coming in February 2011.
Ondrej Palat, Yanni Gourde, Mikhail Sergachev, Nikita Kucherov and Ryan McDonagh tallied assists for the Lightning, who have won four of their first five games. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 29 saves.
Luke Glendening scored the lone Detroit goal with assists from Justin Abdelkader and Trevor Daley. Jimmy Howard turned aside 28 shots.
The Red Wings went 0-for-5 on the power play while the Lightning came up empty in four man-advantage situations.
The Red Wings gave up 15 goals while losing the first two games of their four-game road trip. They were much more competitive in the third stop but still came up short.
The Lightning scored the only goal of the first period. Palat fired the puck from behind the net toward the goalmouth, where it deflected off Point's skate. Point was credited with his fourth goal this season.
The teams traded goals in the second period. Glendening put the Red Wings on the board at the 6:20 mark when he shoveled in a rebound during a scramble in front.
Stamkos scored his first goal of the season at 15:19 of the period. Sergachev backhanded a pass from the right circle and Stamkos one-timed it from the slot past Howard on the stick side.
Howard made a pad save early in the third period on a three-on-one Lightning break during a power play to keep his team within a goal.
Detroit's Darren Helm had a chance to tie it midway through the period when he found himself alone in front of the net but he lost control of the puck.
Killorn scored an empty-net goal with 1:07 remaining.
