Teuvo Teravainen recorded his third career hat trick and Antti Raanta saved all 20 shots he faced for his 20th shutout as the Carolina Hurricanes kept the visiting San Jose Sharks winless with a 3-0 victory Friday night.
Teravainen scored twice in the opening period and capped his first hat trick since March 5 with some third-period insurance. Seth Jarvis and Sebastian Aho got two assists each, and the Hurricanes won their second straight following three consecutive losses. Teravainen has seven goals in nine games this season after totaling 12 during a rather disappointing 2022-23.
Raanta, meanwhile, was not tested often but came up with a pair of key second-period saves on Jan Rutta and a nifty slap shot from Mario Ferraro. Raanta, who got the win in relief of Frederik Andersen during a 6-3 victory at San Jose on Oct. 17, had allowed four goals apiece in each of his previous two starts this season.
The Sharks saw their early-season struggles continue one night after totaling 23 shots in a 6-0 loss at Tampa Bay. However, Kaapo Kahkonen was solid while making 37 saves for San Jose, which has been blanked in seven consecutive periods. The Sharks have scored just eight times overall and allowed 31 non-shootout goals during an 0-7-1 start that's flirting with the club-record 11-game winless streak to open 1995-96.
Carolina opened the scoring 6:10 into the game. On the power play, Jarvis sent a net-front pass for Teravainen to flip by Kahkonen.
Teravainen's one-timer from the left circle, off a Dmitry Orlov pass, cleared the glove of Kahkonen with 4:50 left in the first for a 2-0 Carolina edge.
More precise passing from the Hurricanes left the Sharks' defense scrambling in front of their own net and allowed Teravainen to go high into the net for his final goal with 13:54 remaining in regulation.
Hurricanes star Andrei Svechnikov recorded four shots on goal in his season debut after tearing his ACL in March.
Carolina has won five straight against the Sharks amid a 6-0-1 stretch.
