David Pastrnak scored twice in the third period to highlight his three-point night as the Boston Bruins defeated the visiting Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Saturday night.
Pavel Zacha and Charlie McAvoy helped the Bruins get out to a 2-0 lead during the opening 20 minutes. Pastrnak also gave an assist to Zacha before netting his back-to-back goals to finish off Boston's seventh win in eight games (7-0-1).
Pastrnak's first goal came on his second penalty shot of the campaign. He has already scored eight goals and recorded five multi-point games.
Boston's Jeremy Swayman made 23 saves to remain undefeated at 4-0-0.
Joe Veleno scored his fifth goal in five games for Detroit, which has lost back-to-back games and gone 0-2-1 since a five-game win streak.
Ville Husso took the loss despite a 27-save effort.
The Bruins found the back of the net within the final 20 seconds of a strong power play when Zacha moved toward the top of the crease to bury the rebound of a Brad Marchand shot at 10:33 of the first.
McAvoy doubled the Boston lead with his first goal of the season at 14:36. He glided down the left wing and cut to the net front, where he slipped the puck past Husso after it glanced off the goaltender's stick for an unassisted tally.
The visitors broke Swayman's bid for a second consecutive shutout and trimmed its deficit to 2-1 with 13:20 left in regulation, as Veleno stepped into the left circle and whipped a wrist shot high on the glove side.
After being hooked by Detroit defenseman Jake Walman on a breakaway, Pastrnak staked the Bruins to a two-goal lead again as he deked and snapped a penalty shot goal upstairs on Husso with 8:41 to go.
Pastrnak clinched the Boston victory with 2:19 left, banking a long empty-net tally off the boards in his own defensive zone and all the way down ice.
