Jake Allen stopped 45 shots for his first shutout of the season and the Montreal Canadiens picked up their first victory in San Jose since 1999 with a 4-0 win over the Sharks on Thursday night.

It was the 22nd career shutout for Allen and first since March 8, 2020, when he blanked the Chicago Blackhawks as a member of the St. Louis Blues. His 45 saves were the second most in a shutout in Montreal history behind only a 52-save performance by Hall of Famer Jacques Plante on Nov. 13, 1955, at Chicago.

The Canadiens also snapped a 12-game losing streak at San Jose. Montreal's last road win against the Sharks came on Nov. 23, 1999, when Craig Rivet scored in overtime for a 3-2 victory.

On Thursday, Josh Anderson had a goal and an assist and Mike Hoffman, Alexander Romanov and Brendan Gallagher also scored for Montreal, which produced more than one goal for just the second time in eight games this season. Nick Suzuki added a pair of assists.

Adin Hill finished with 28 saves for San Jose, which lost its third consecutive game after starting the season with a four-game winning streak.

Montreal took a 1-0 lead at the 12:09 mark of the first period when Hoffman, all alone on the right side of the goal, scooped up a long rebound of a Brett Kulak slap shot and tucked it inside the right post for his third goal of the season.

The Canadiens extended their lead to 2-0 midway through the second period. Romanov one-timed a Jonathan Drouin pass from the left point past Hill's blocker side for his first goal of the season.

Gallagher made it 3-0 about four minutes later with a power-play goal, swatting Anderson's shot from the right circle in mid-air inside the left post for his first goal of the season.

San Jose pulled Hill for an extra attacker with 3:20 left, and Anderson ended any Sharks' comeback hopes with a length-of-the-ice, empty-net goal, his first tally of the season, with 2:08 left.
