The Carolina Hurricanes overcame a difficult first period with three second-period goals in a 6-3 victory against the visiting Calgary Flames on Friday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Andrei Svechnikov had two goals and Brady Skjei had a goal and two assists. Jesper Fast, Derek Stepan and Tony DeAngelo also scored for Carolina. Steven Lorentz had two assists.

The Hurricanes had been idle since Saturday, but they racked up their ninth victory in the last 10 games.

Goalie Frederik Andersen, in his first full game in almost three weeks, stopped 36 shots for the Hurricanes.

Blake Coleman, Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau had the goals for Calgary, which has dropped three consecutive games in regulation for the first time this season. Tkachuk also had an assist.

Flames goaltender Dan Vladar made 31 saves.

Gaudreau's goal came with 11:03 remaining. Shortly after the Hurricanes failed to cash in on a power play, Skjei's goal with 1:52 left gave Carolina a two-goal cushion before Svechnikov's power-play goal in the final minute.

Coleman's goal came 5:12 into the game. He benefited from apparent confusion among a couple of Hurricanes inside the blue line, taking the puck and firing it past Andersen.

The Flames had 15 of the game's first 18 shots on goal. But the Hurricanes drew even in goals with 2:45 left in the first period when Fast, playing in his 500th career game, posted his second goal since late November by deflecting the puck past Vladar.

By the end of the period, the Flames had registered 21 shots. That's the most allowed by Carolina in any period this season. Shots were even at 28-28 through two periods.

Stepan's go-ahead goal in the second period came as a result of Lorentz controlling the puck despite pressure from a pair of Flames.

It was the first loss in regulation to a Metropolitan Division team for the Flames this season. They're now 8-1-2 in those matchups.
