Nathan MacKinnon scored 52 seconds into overtime, Mikko Rantanen tallied two goals and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in Denver on Monday.

MacKinnon also had an assist, Cale Makar contributed two assists and Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves for Colorado, which has won four straight.

Kailer Yamamoto had a goal and an assist, Evander Kane also scored and Mike Smith stopped 28 shots for the Oilers, whose five-game winning streak ended.

Both teams were active at Monday's trading deadline and made moves to bolster their depth instead of pulling off a blockbuster deal.

The Avalanche acquired forwards Artturi Lehkonen and Andre Cogliano from the Montreal Canadiens and San Jose Sharks, respectively. The Oilers picked up defenseman Brett Kulak from the Canadiens and center Derick Brassard from the Philadelphia Flyers.

All four players were scratches Monday night.

Colorado won it when Makar and MacKinnon came into the offensive zone on an odd-man rush and MacKinnon's wrister beat Smith. It was MacKinnon's 22nd goal of the season.

Edmonton got the first power-play opportunity of the game and nearly scored on it but Kuemper made a couple of big saves.

Colorado didn't miss on its first chance with the man advantage, in the first period. The Avalanche worked the puck around the offensive zone and MacKinnon passed it to Rantanen on the side of the net. Rantanen had his pass deflected back to him, and he beat Smith to make it 1-0 at 12:42.

Yamamoto tied it early at 4:07 of the second period on a delayed penalty, his 16th of the season.

Rantanen gave Colorado the lead again with another power-play goal when his shot from the top of the circle was deflected by Smith at 6:24 of the second. It was his 31st of the season, tying his career high set in 2018-19.

Kane tied it again when he scored off of an Avalanche turnover at 9:01 of the second, his 13th of the season.
