Dylan Strome scored twice for the Washington Capitals, who surrendered a three-goal lead before rallying for a 6-4 win against the New Jersey Devils in a seesaw contest on Wednesday at Newark, N.J.

Alex Ovechkin and Anthony Mantha each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who had scored a total of six goals in their previous five games. Washington's Connor McMichael and Sonny Milano also scored, Evgeny Kuznetsov logged two assists, and Hunter Shepard made 18 saves for the win in his NHL debut.

Tyler Toffoli scored twice and had an assist for the Devils one night after notching a hat trick, and Jack Hughes had three assists to give him seven in his past two games. Timo Meier had a goal and an assist, and Nico Hischier added a goal.

New Jersey goalie Vitek Vanecek stopped 14 of 16 shots over the final two periods after Akira Schmid allowed three goals on eight shots in the first.

Mantha gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 6:37 of the first period when he gathered in a New Jersey turnover and beat Schmid from the right circle.

Strome made it 2-0 at 15:52 of the first when he converted a backdoor pass from Ovechkin on the rush.

Milano increased the lead to 3-0 less than two minutes later, getting behind the defense, receiving a pass from T.J. Oshie and beating Schmid from the left circle.

Vanecek replaced Schmid to start the second period, and the Devils scored three goals in a span of 2:11 to tie it.

Toffoli got the Devils on the board at 4:31, scoring on a wrist shot after Meier's shot was blocked in front.

Meier tipped in a pass from Hughes at 5:19 to pull the Devils within 3-2.

Hischier tied the game 3-3 at 6:42, knocking in a loose puck during a scramble in front of Shepard.

Toffoli gave the Devils a 4-3 lead at 10:01 of the second when he put home the rebound after Shepard made a save on Luke Hughes.

The Capitals tied it just 18 seconds into the third period. Strome worked a give-and-go with Kuznetsov and tapped in the return pass on a power play for his fourth goal of the season.

McMichael gave the Capitals a 5-4 lead when he took a pass from Mantha during a two-on-one rush and scored on a backhand shot at 2:09.

Milano appeared to make it 6-4 at 3:30, but the Devils challenged and the play was ruled offside after a video review.

Ovechkin scored an empty-net goal at 18:25 for the 6-4 final.
